Washington DC - It is party time here in the nations capital, as their beloved Capitals have made it to the Stanley Cup playoffs, taking on the Montreal Canadiens, here tonight.
It was a tough road for these Capitals to make it this far. They were one of the bottom feeder teams in terms of goal scoring.. They were mired in a major slump at the end of the season. Their offense is absolutely terrible. Yet somehow they managed to make it all work, and finish 4th in the Wales Conference, earning themselves home ice advantage in the first round.
"Our guys play a different style of hockey than most of the other teams in the JAFHL. Our guys know that they aren't going to score a ton of goals, so they make up for that in other ways. They play gritty, hard nosed hockey. They fight for the loose puck, they crash the boards, and everyone plays defense. That is what has kept us alive and allowed us to be where we are today, tough defense. They have kept the pressure off of Donny and Mike in net, and allowed them to face mostly easy shots. Our team led the league in fewest goals allowed and fewest power play goals. It was a tough year, but we made it!", GM Salvi said.
"I am just excited to be here! Being named the team's MVP of the regular season is an honor as well. It wasn't just me who got us here, it was a team effort for sure. Strong defense got us here!," Geoff Courtnall.
"I am looking forward to starting this series. I know I was in a slump at the end of the season, but my team got me through it. These last few days off have helped me clear my head and get it back in the game. I foresee good things coming for us in the playoffs!", Don Beaupre is quoted as saying.
Either way you cut it, it is going to be a tough series. Montreal is tough, and will be hard to beat, but the Capitals seem to have that magic aura around them, guiding their way. It will be an interesting series, with the brothers Courtnall facing off against each other, it will come down to if Washington can play better defense, and sneak a few past Roy. If their defense is even only on an average level, they will be beat. The Caps will have to play stellar D to win this series.
