New York (NY) - The Rangers take a 2-0 lead in the second round of the Stanley Cup Playoffs. After the Buffalo Sabres take the Rangers to a 7th game in round one of the playoffs, the Rangers jump out to an early 2-0 series lead in round two, taking the first two game in Hartford.
"Being able to go into Hartford and steal two games is huge" said team captain Brian Leetch, "What can you say, we had the offense rolling, and Richter holding them to 2 goals in 2 games allowed us to press on the puck up the ice and create pressure in the O zone."
After leading the team in points in the regular season with 84, Denis Savard has gotten even better in the playoffs. Savard leads the Rangers with 17 points in 9 playoff games.
The Rangers are also getting big contributions from two rookies, Mike Richter and Rob Blake. After a somewhat shaky first round where the Sabres scored 5 goals in a game twice, and 3 goals twice, Richter held the Whalers to 2 goals in game 1 and then shut them out in game 2. Blake has been solid in both rounds. He is a +9 in the 9 playoff games while contributing 7 points.
"Picking up the first 2 games of the series, on the road, is huge, but we know this series if far from over" said Leetch. "Hartford won their division, they have a great team, and they aren't going to lay down. We expect a grind from here on out. We are going to take this one game at a time, and look to come out to a strong start in game 3. It will be nice to be playing at home, The Garden is always rocking, and we expect the home crowd to give us a big boost."
Games 3 and 4 are back at The Garden tonight and tomorrow night. It will be investing to see if the Rangers can keep the momentum going, or if the Whalers come out and steal a game or two on the road, as the Rangers did to them.
